There are four types of visualizations embedded in this site. Galleries, Faceted Browsers, Maps, and Facet Flows. Clicking on the “Change View” drop-down menu at the top right of the screen allows you to toggle between the available visualizations. Clicking on the “Exit Visualizations” button at the top right will close the visualization and return you to the home page.
Gallery Interaction: The gallery view is made of topic cards, each representing either an agency or a document in the repository. The cards appear in different colors based on a given attribute in the data.
Sorting: Click on “Sort By” to bring up a drop down menu of attributes about the agencies and documents. Sorting topic cards will shuffle the display order of the cards.
Filtering: Filter allows for a display of a subset of agencies or documents. Click on “Filter By” to select an attribute from the drop down menu. Select an attribute, then click on “Options” next to the “Filter By” button. This will bring up a pop-up window that allows you to choose specific attributes, which will then display only those cards with that corresponding value. Check which values to view, click Apply, and the topic cards will filter out. To return to a view of all topic cards, click No Filter.
Browsing: The facet browser shows agencies or documents based on a number of attributes. Each column represents an attribute, with all of the corresponding values appearing below. Click on any combination of values across the columns to display a subset of agencies or documents. Underneath the browser is a list of all relevant agencies or documents. Click on an entry to bring up a light box with more information.
Resizing Browser Window: The browser window can be stretched out by clicking the bottom right corner of the browser window and pulling it out/down. The window of search results can similarly be made bigger.
Reset: To reset any value, click the red reset button at the top of all columns. Once reset, the button will return to gray.
Interaction: The Facet Flow visualization (“Gender Attributes”) shows the relationship between the intended gender audience for a document and the use of gendered grammar. The colored bands can be rearranged by clicking on the alpha or size links for either attribute. Attribute positions can be swapped by dragging the top down to the bottom and vice versa. Hovering over a colored band shows the percentage of relevant results in the data. Clicking on a colored band will bring up all relevant documents in the window below.
Map Interaction: To zoom: double click or use the plus/minus buttons on the top right. To move around the map (panning): click and drag your mouse. To re-set the positioning of the map and the zoom level: hit the reset button (circular arrows) at the top right of the map (under the plus/minus buttons).
Map Dot Colors: Each dot on the map represents an agency. The dots appear in different colors based on the active map legend, which is a filter for visualizing the dots. There are several unique legends to explore. Changing the active legend (drop down menu at the top left of the map screen) will change the color of the dots.
Map Legends: Clicking on a value in a map legend (either checking the box or clicking on the term itself) will hide all markers not associated with that value. To see markers associated with multiple values, check all of the appropriate boxes. To restore all markers, select “Hide/Show All” (the first value in the legend).
